This Was Used To Treat People With ADHD, But It Looks Like A Torture Device

If you have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), consider yourself lucky to be living in our modern times.

ADHD is a disorder that causes its sufferers to lose focus easily. It's an exhausting condition. Luckily, we have medicine now that helps combat those symptoms. Breakthroughs in modern medicine have allowed us to pinpoint the problem, which helps those dealing with ADHD lead more fulfilling lives.
Back in the day, though, they weren't so lucky. This is a contraption known as "The Isolator." It was meant to improve focus and attention for the wearer, but it just looks like a torture device.

The Isolator was a device invented by Hugo Gernsback in the 1920s that was designed to help people concentrate.

It rendered the wearer deaf and pumped them full of oxygen from a tank. The user could only see out of the tiny slits in the helmet so they could focus solely on the task in front of them. It was like the human version of horse blinders, basically.

Obviously, it didn't work too well. It was one of the earliest attempts at fighting concentration problems, and it sounded good in theory, but ultimately, it did more harm than good. Hugo Gernsback went on to be quite a pioneer in the science-fiction genre, but his real-life invention didn't go over so well.
